Ladefoged, P. (2001) Vowels and Consonants: an introduction to the sounds of languages. Blackwell.

International Phonetic Association (1999) Handbook of the International Phonetic Association. Cambridge University Press.

This term's course provides an intensive introduction to general, articulatory phonetic description and transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet.

 
Week 1 Introduction to Phonetics. Respiration and Airstream Mechanisms.
Week 2  The vocal tract and larynx. Phonation.
Week 3 Prosody 1.
Week 4 Articulation: Vowels and consonants. Stricture. Cardinal Vowels.
Week 5  Consonants: Place and manner of articulation.
Week 6  Double and secondary articulation.
Week 7  Prosody 2.
Week 8 Observing and recording speech.
