Workshop structure and participants
The workshop is funded by the European Science Foundation Network 'Tone and
Intonation in Europe'. It will be attended
by the network coordinators, a number of guest speakers, one guest lecturer and
local staff and students. We welcome
participants from outside Oxford but please note that we do not have funding for
outside participants. If you would like to attend some or all of the lectures and you
are not based in Oxford, please contact a member of the organising committee.

Accommodation and meals
Invited participants will be accommodated in
Christ Church from
Tuesday night (1 April) to Saturday night (5 April).
Please note that we can offer single room accommodation only.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner will also be served in Christ Church.
Dinner will be at 20.00. The Christ Church main gate
will be open until 11.00. If you would like to get back in after 23.00,
please let the porters know when you leave. If you will arrive after
23.00 on Tuesday or Wednesday, please let me know and I'll get in touch
with the porters.
For some background information on Christ Church, please click
here (the text is a bit pompous, intended for tourists).
If you would like to bring family or friends, or if you like to stay on
after the workshop, you could try to book accommodation
at the
College Guest house
(despite the name, the place is not connected to the University or
a college). For Oxford, it offers extremely reasonable prices.
(Generally, you have to pay minimally 60 pounds per room but you won't
necessarily get a very nice room for that). Another place
that's been tried and recommended by relatives of phonetics lab members is the
Marlborough House Hotel. Booking early is a good idea for both
of these. Finally, please note that College accommodation in Christ Church
is restricted to the workshop dates. Unfortunately, we can't add on
extra nights.
Travel and Directions
By Air
The nearest Airport is London Heathrow. The quickest and most convenient way
to Oxford is by bus. Buses depart from Bay 11 at the Central Bus Station
at Heathrow (every 30 minutes). The
timetable
is available on the internet. The Central Bus Station is sign-posted within the airport ('Buses').
The journey to Oxford take approximately 70 minutes. You will arrive at Gloucester
Green Bus Station in the centre of Oxford (centre
square on this map, on the left). From Gloucester Green, the walk to Christ
Church through the centre of town takes maximally 10 minutes.
The
quickest way is the following: from Gloucester Green go out onto George
Street and head towards
the Westgate Shopping Centre. Turn left onto Queen Street, and right onto
St. Aldates. Go down St. Aldates until you see
the entrance to Christ Church on the left. You can't miss it; it's underneath a large bell tower ('Tom Tower').
You can also take a taxi which will probably take longer, but if you have a lot of luggage and/or
children with you, it might be more practical. Taxis will be waiting at the bus station. To find the taxis, instead of going out onto George
Street, go down the little lane that is shown in white on the map
and that looks like a dead end (to the right of pink section on the map which marks the bus station). It's not a dead end for pedestrians;
it leads out onto a square with restaurants etc.
If you go down that lane, you'll see taxis lined up on the other
side of the square.
When you've reached Christ Church, please go to the porters' lodge. The lodge is inside the gate, on the left. Please ask for directions to your room. The porters will also have a welcome pack for you (program, map etc.).
On the map, you'll find Christ Church in the square
in the centre, bottom row.
Arrival by train
On the map, Oxford station is in the row in the centre, in the square on the left. To get
to Christ Church from the station, you can take a taxi. There are never
very many, however and the people getting out of the station first usually snap them up pretty quickly. If you'd like to walk rather than wait, go onto Botley Road
and up Hythe Bridge Street. When you've reached George Street,
turn right towards the Westgate Shopping Centre. Turn left onto
Queen Street and right again onto St. Aldates. Go down St. Aldates until you see
the entrance to Christ Church on the left, underneath a large bell tower. The walk takes about 15 minutes.
Workshop Location
All sessions will be held in the Taylor Institution on St. Giles in
room 3. On this map of central Oxford, you'll find the Taylor Institute
next to the Ashmolean Museum. The Ashmolean is in the square in the centre
of the map.
How to get to the Taylor Institute from Christ Church
The shortest route is via Cornmarket, the pedestrianised connection
between St. Aldates and St. Giles (centre square on the
map). However, Cornmarket
is covered in roadworks at the moment and walking is not particularly
pleasant. A pleasant three-minute detour goes as follows:
From Christ Church, go up St. Aldates,
turn right into High Street and go through the Covered Market (use the first
High Street entrance to the market on the other side High Street; the entrance is covered by
a blue and gold canopy). Go straight through the market, turn right towards
Exeter College, then left past Exeter College. Go onto Broad Street and turn
left. Turn right immediately after Balliol and you'll have
reached the Taylor Institution. (Alternative: Instead of crossing the market, you could go a little further down High Street and turn left into Turl Street
(left of Brasenose College) and then carry on until you reach Broad Street).
Lunchtime walks
If the weather is nice, Christ Church Meadow, right behind the college,
is lovely for a walk in the countryside.
A nice walk through town is
the following: from Christ Church, go up St. Aldates and turn right into the little lane in front of the Town Hall and the Museum of Oxford. Go down the lane until you read Oriel Square. Turn right and walk past Oriel College and the back gate of Christ Church. Walk down Merton Street (Corpus Christi, Merton College). Turn left at the end of the road and walk past the Examination Schools on your left (this is where exams are held). Turn left at the end and go out onto High Street. Go up High Street on the right side of the road past St. Edmund Hall and Queens College. Turn right when you've
reached Great St. Mary's Church and walk past the Radcliffe Camera.
Carry straight on past the Bodleian Library (it's got a lovely courtyard;
you can go in though the gate on the left). Carry on and turn left
onto Broad Street. Go down Broad Street, turn right when you've passed
Balliol College and you're back at the Taylor Institute. The complete
walk takes about 30-40 minutes.
If it's raining, you could have a stroll in the
Ashmolean Museum which
is right next to the Taylor Institute.
